The Strength Of Apple. ââ¬ÅApple Had Always Been ââ¬ËDifferentââ¬â¢
The Strength of Apple ââ¬Å"Apple had always been ââ¬Ëdifferentââ¬â¢ ââ¬â and what drove it never changedâ⬠(Segall 88) Apple is arguably the most influential and disruptive technology company on the global scale. Founded on April 1st 1976 in Cupertino California as Apple Computer Inc., Apple has had its fair share of challenges and failures over the past 41 years but has become a behemoth of a technology company over the last ten years or so, amassing gross amounts of success (Rawlinson). The question is how; how did a small company started in a garage become so prosperous and how have they made the competition, namely Microsoft and Samsung, almost irrelevant. The answer is multi-faceted. Obviously, timing plays a huge role in circumstances such asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Apple I was a groundbreaking product for its time because all it required was a keyboard and a monitor, other companies needed extra circuitry to display text making the Apple I more enticing. While there were 200 Apple I computers produced, a significant amount for the time, Appleââ¬â¢s success really began with the Ap ple II (Rawlinson). The Apple II was a true innovation for its time and completely revolutionized the computer market. However, it was not the Apple II itself that was amazing even though it had color graphics and a very high resolution for its time; it was what you could do with the computer that garnered so much interest, especially from businesses (Rawlinson). Dan Bricklin, a Harvard Business School student saw that he could create and run a program on the Apple II that could do a few different types of calculations ââ¬â we know this today as a spreadsheet. The program or app, named VisiCalc, solidified Appleââ¬â¢s place in the computer and technology industry (Rawlinson). After the Apple II came the Macintosh and then came the iMac. The iMac was a design of beauty ââ¬Å"on the shelves next to the beige computers that dominated the market back then, the teal iMac, with its cutecircular mouse and translucent body, stood outâ⬠(The Apple Revolution). The Yellow Wallpaper as an Attack on Radical Feminism
The Yellow Wallpaper as an Attack on Radical Feminism ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠explores mental illness and, through this exploration, presents a critique of the place of women in a patriarchal society. Interestingly, Charlotte Perkins Gilman never intended the latter. The primary intent of her short story is to criticize of a physician prescribed treatment called rest cure. The treatment, which she underwent, required female patients to ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢live as domestic a life as possibleââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Gilman). This oppressive treatment, however, parallels the oppression of women. As such, ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠has been interpreted as a feminist work. In the story, Gilman comments on the status of women, the nature and source of their confinementâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Though John seems to love his wife, his actions towards her are repressive and, unfortunately, without compassion for his wife. Gilman, by way of the narrator, endows John with all the qualities of the typical nineteenth century man. John is ââ¬Å"practical in the extreme,â⬠ââ¬Å"has no patience with faith,â⬠and ââ¬Å"scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures.â⬠He is a man of reason, born from the ideals of the Enlightenment. John takes active measures to confine and restrict his wife, though he does so with good intention. He makes out a ââ¬Å"schedule prescription for each hour in the day.â⬠He decides who will be entertained and when the social engagements will take place. He teaches his wife to repress her ââ¬Å"imaginative power and habit of story-makingâ⬠and encourages ââ¬Å"real earnest reasonable talk.â⬠And, the most damaging of all, he restricts any creative endeavours, including writing. Moreover, John, though it does not seem to be out of spite, condescends to his wife by calling her a ââ¬Å"blessed little gooseâ⬠and addressing her in the third person (132-134). John exerts total control over his wife and virtually elimi nates all modes of self-expression. He is the source of the narratorââ¬â¢s confinement. Having no outlet for the tumult of emotions, desires and passions, the narratorââ¬â¢s observations and feelings about the yellow wallpaper and the woman trapped behind it become her mode of self-expression.
